He's the main man for a funky night out in London town, and he's renowned for his face-smashingly funky festival sets . . . . which are just part of the reason why he is also a previous Funk and Filth Mix of the Year Poll winner [2014] as voted for by you lovely lot!

He is, of course, DJ Jimi Needles!

He's followed up his award-winning Needlewurk Vol.1 mix (which was the set that scooped him the MOTY crown!) with a frankly ridiculously delicious Vol. 2 compendium of beats! AND he's just unleashed a fan-funking-tastic new remix as FREE DOWNLOAD right here via Funk and Filth!

We simply had to catch up with the man to find out what makes him tick. Press play on this naughty mix and then read on to find out what he had to say . . .

What's the new free download?
I've flipped the soul standard ''Mr Big Stuff'' by Jean Knight and given it the Jungle Strikes treatment. Enjoy!

What's been your highlight of 2015?
Without a doubt my first appearance at Glastonbury Festival (Heaven Stage). Had a wicked set time in between the amazing Hypeman Sage and Ed Solo & Deekline - as it was Thursday, nothing had really opened and the main stages open Friday - you could really tell the crowd just wanted to go fucking nuts and party hard; the hype was brought!

Where is your favourite venue or event to play? Anywhere in the world?
I DJ once a year at Shambala Festival (UK), I've been DJing in the Social Club for four years now - same time every Saturday night. Every year it just gets better and better, and it's the first time as a DJ where I've started to see familiar faces and crews come back for that one set which is the most rewarding feeling. Until next year, Shambalans!

If you could form an ensemble, go back-to-back with any DJ or collaborate with any artist in history, who would it be with? And what sort of stuff do you think you’d make?
Les Claypool from Primus, hands down. Not sure what the results would be or what we'd come up with, but there is just no one that plays Bass guitar like him. The guy sounds like 3 or 4 guitarists playing simultaneously - insane! I'd also like to jam with JB's drummer, Clyde Stubblefield; that shuffle baby!!!

We like to think we’re pretty sharp at recognizing upcoming talent in the bass music industry, and you must have recognized a few too. Is there anyone (DJ, musician, vocalist, producer . . . ) who you think we should keep our eyes on? Who is going to be big in 2016?
Would have to beSkope. Had the pleasure of meeting Alex last year. He's a phenomenal bass producer, he's had a solid year of releases and collabs, not to mention being one of the driving forces behind funky bass supergroup 'Wicked City', alongside Krafty Kuts & Erb n' Dub. Looking forward to seeing what he comes up with next year, his music always makes it into my sets and mixtapes.

What is your favourite bit of DJ/live music kit at the moment? Got any new gadgets to add even more punch to your performances or studio sessions this year?
I'm getting a custom Scratchophone made in the spring. I feel quite static when I DJ, especially when I'm performing live with hip hoppers Great Scott (@wearegreatscott). I wanna walk around on stage and scratch, is that too much to ask??

What's your view on the whole vinyl vs MP3/CDJ argument?
Are people still arguing about that!? Occasionally I'll play a funk/soul vinyl-only party, and it's liberating, if you have a screen, you will look at it. Nowadays I'll only buy albums I really REALLY like, killer 7" vinyl and anything sample worthy - charity shop digs etc. I think if you're DJing today, you are ultimately going to evolve into a producer - why wouldn't you? The result is you need a way of playing out your creations, edits and remixes on the fly, mp3s are the solution. Serato, for me, bridges the gap perfectly.

What are you most looking forward to in 2016?
Lots of exciting stuff already planned next year. 2016 brings imminent touring with "Ephemerals" (Jalapeno Records), we play soul music, and have a fair few shows and festivals confirmed - being on the road in a band is great laugh, and the music is fun to play (I'm on drums). I'm working on tracks that will make my debut album, got a few tracks and idea down, but there is no rush at the moment - I feel I've still got good ground to cover as a learning producer - making the leap from bootlegging the shit out of stuff on Acid pro to making a full blown album using Ableton is gonna take a bit of time! However, bootlegs will be in full flow - aside from the usual free tracks, there will be originals and bootlegs upcoming on Rocstar and Jungle Strikes. I feel I've got a great momentum on these labels and wanna keep on putting out stuff that I like. Drum & Bass and Funky Breaks (and maybe chuck in some Hip Hop and Electro-Swing too) can all be expected. I'm also finishing an album with band mate and long time collaborator Nic 'Mondegreen' Hillman, for now, the project can only be referred to as ''Goldhawk''. That's about all I can reveal for now!

For more Jimi, hit him up here . . .

Mix Of The Year Winner 2015 Announced . . .

Another year of voting comes to an end, and a new Funk and Filth Mix Of The Year Winner is crowned for 2015!!!

And we have a brand new winner this year . . . following in the footsteps of previous winners Neon Steve and Jimi Needles is the undisputed king of the funky, filthy mixtape for 2015 . . . . . Busta!

BUSTOLOGY 101 is rammed full of his own beautifully bass-laden edits and remixes, so definitely showcases what this Australian beat-blender is all about. This victory made all the more special thanks to the fact that Busta dedicated this mix to the fantastically funky filthy Lewd Behaviour, who the scene said goodbye to earlier this year.

Thanks to everyone who voted in this year's poll, and all the artists in the shortlist (and loads of others who missed the list this year too!). Enjoy your winning mix, and here's to many more years of funk, filth and general bassline frolics!!

Click here to download Bustology 101 for free!

and below you'll find the rest of the shortlisted mixes that were busted to one side to win this year's poll!

Jem Panufnik & Rennie Pilgrem Pop-up Art Show in London

The indescribably-talented Jem Panufnik is bringing his unique brand of funky art back to London, and this time he has a tag-team partner in the shape of breaks legend Rennie Pilgrem!

A couple of years ago we went to another one of Jem's London art shows, and it was a visually stunning stroll down musical memory lane, so we'll definitely be heading back again this year!

Those who know about Jem and Rennie will know that they are both legendary in the realms of both funk and filth, so whether you're a bass music fan or a eclectic art connoisseur then this show is for you!

Full details...
**Thurs 26th 6-9pm, Sat 28 & Sun 29 November 11am-5pm**
Most vinyl junkies will be familiar with Jem’s iconic Finger Lickin’ Records artwork. Rennie’s visual style is also very much loaded in character – between them a mischievous mix of dark and comical. Here for the first time, these two renowned artists from the world of underground dance music are presenting a visually scintillating selection of work in an open studio exhibition in Twickenham, West London.

On show and available to buy will be a superb selection of paintings, sculptures and prints ranging from unjustifiably expensive to suspiciously cheap. Rennie and Jem will be present so bring some old sleeves along too if you want them scribbled on.

THURSDAY 26 NOV 6pm - 9pm
The Studio, Riverside House, Riverside, Twickenham TW1 3DJ

Mix Of The Year 2015 - VOTING NOW CLOSED

Voting is now closed for this year. Click here to see who won!

It's that time of year again! A look back at the tastiest free mixes from the last 12 months, and your chance to vote for the best!

Any mix from any funky filthy genre that's been unleashed in the alst 12 months is eligible, and we've got a quality selection right here! From chilled out beats, to face-shredding bass lines, from some of the biggest names in the business to some of the freshest up-and-coming DJs . . . these truly are the best mixes we've heard in the last year!

This year our shortlist has stretched to 16!! Check out who featured and who won in last year's poll.

Here's how you can help decide this year's winner:

> LISTEN to the mixes below
> DOWNLOAD your favourites (they're almost all FREE to download!)
> VOTE for the ONE mix that you think should take the title of Funk and Filth's Mix Of The Year 2015

The voting options are on the right-hand side of this page (not visible when viewing on mobile phones unfortunately), all you have to do is click next to the mix that you think is the best, then click VOTE!
You can also leave us a Facebook comment below, or Tweet us using the hashtag #FunkAndFilth.

We'll include your votes along with our internal voting at Funk and Filth HQ when we decide on the winner! Funk and Filth will have the final decision and any dubious voting practices will result in disqualification.

Let's get this shit started with some bona fide Ghetto Funk bangers!! B-Side and Detta are the main men when it comes to funky ass beats and basslines, this mix is STRONG!!

Let's knock the funk down a bit and dial up the filth! A new UFO Project mixtape is always a treat, and this collection of bangers had us bouncing all throughout summer 2015.

Everyone's favourite hooligan showed us how it's done earlier this year with this sublime mix. Dark, dirty and absolutely on point with the banger selection, nice one Terry!

Sheffield lads the Underheadz are bass flingers extraordinaire, and they've never disappointed with their collections of gurn-inducing basslines. This summer's Harley Promo Mix may be their best ever!

Another devastatingly dirty year for the legend they call Deekline. Sure fire party rocker and beat-baker to hungry bass heads all over the world, his Miami Heat Promo Mix has been rolling round the Funk and Filth HQ playlist for months!

The fourth instalment in arguably one of the funkiest mixtape series of all time smashed into our eardrums earlier this year and, as you'd expect from A.Skillz, it was goddam gorgeous!

Retropolis has spent much of the last year incarcerated in the Funk and Filth dungeons being forced against his will (as he may tell you, but he loves it really!) to concoct the brutal Much Breaks mixtape series exclusively for Funk and Filth! Volumes 1 - 4 are available now for FREE, but it's Vol 3 which has smashed it's way onto the MOTY shortlist for it's pure badassery!

A man who has previously held aloft the Funk and Filth Mix of the Year crown, Neon Steve came back with a thunderous end to 2014 and a truly funktacular 2015! He almost had 2 mixes in this shortlist, but we kind of felt that wasn't fair, so here is (in our opinion) his best of the last 12 months: another glorious collection of chilled beats in his epic Pleasensations series . . .

Now for a change of tempo! Earlier this year D&B legend Randall dropped this Metalheadz Re-Mastered History Mix and it's an absolute masterpiece! Any Funk and Filth readers who weren't fortunate enough to be involved in D&B in the 90s should get all over this right now! Those who were around in the 90s don't need to be told!

Undeniably one of our favourite breaks DJs, GUAU delivers mixtapes that will make your heart boil, your ribcage rattle and your feet tell you that they are in charge from now! Bassbins up to the max, GUAU is taking over . . .

This one nearly broke the internet when it landed, and for good reason! Stickybuds = awesome. Shambhala = mental. Stickybuds + Shambhala = . . . . well you do the maths! This mix is fucking fantastic.

Potentially the best mix in the history of music??? We'll let you decide for yourselves, but the calibre of the selection (and mixing of course) from Krafty in this is bordering on perfection. Get this mix into your ears asap.

Another firm Funk and Filth favourite, Busta hit us with a 45 minute compilation of his finest beats, and it's delicious! This is the sort of thing it would be easy to overdose on!

Kurse has been on our Funk and Filth radar for a while now, and he's used 2015 to smash his way into the forefront of the UK bass scene. This mixtape is just one example of what he's got. Scarily good stuff!

Yeah we know it's their set from Glastonbury 2014, but they only unleashed it for download this year, so it falls into this years poll! And it's a monster collection of old school flavoured beats and face-shredding basslines and it's bloody amazing! Nice one Vinyl Junkie and Sanxion!

Completing our Funk and Filth Mix of the Year 2015 shortlist are the unstoppable 7DB boys! Renowned for delivering an onslaught of breaks and bass these guys are definitely winning the breaks game this year. Naughty stuff . . .

There is your shortlist! Who gets your vote?

Of course, there were loads of other awesome mixes out there in the last 12 months (most of them will have been featured here on Funk and Filth at some point!), but we had to boil it down to our favourites, and here they are for you to listen to, download for free and vote for your favourite!

You'll find the voting buttons at the top of this page on the right hand side (not visible when viewing on mobile phones!), and you can also leave a Facebook comment on this page, or Tweet us using the hashtag #FunkAndFilth.

Hope you enjoy all the mixes and massive thanks to all the DJs and Producers for another year of funky, filthy, downright dirty beats!

Krafty Kuts - A Golden Era Of Breakbeat

Is this possibly the best hour of beats ever compiled?

When this podcast landed the other day it had me running to my beat locker to see if the krafty Mr Kuts had snuck in and burgled my pantry! So many old favourites and classic basslines are crammed into this mix that Krafty will have to try very hard indeed to outdo himself in his next podcast instalment.

You really know this mix has arrived early on with the epic Fasten Your Seatbelts from the heyday of Pendulum and Freestylers. From there it's a breakbeat odyssey rammed full of anthems from the Plumps, Stanton Warriors, Drumattic Twins, Deekline and more, via classics from Azzido Da Bass, Reach and Spin and DJ Zinc and some personal favourites from Slyde, Sporty-O and Keith MacKenzie and Detroit Grand Pubahs. Plus there's a sneaky little interview towards the end with the Plump DJs and Freestylers fielding questions from Krafty.

And who better to steer this transatlantic bassliner through this perfect storm of breaks than Kaptain Krafty himself! Sit back, turn it up, and enjoy . . .

Listen on iTunes

Words from Krafty:
"This is the music that really took me around the globe and people associate Krafty Kuts with. For me some, of the most exciting and fresh sounding music has been with the breakbeat scene over the years. Playing to 40,000 people at the Exit Festival, headlining shows across Australia & New Zealand to big Festivals in the UK & Europe, USA & Canada. So many great artists have been a part of the Breaks scene ie. Freq Nasty, Plump DJ's, Stanton Warriors, Adam Freeland, Evil 9, DJ Icey, Deekline, Prodigy, Meat Katie, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Rennie Pilgrem, Soul Of Man, Squarepusher, Pendulum, DJ Zinc & many more are all featured in this podcast. This was a trip down memory lane and I remember watching people lose there mind to so many of these tunes over the years and it's really good to see the Breakbeat scene still flourishing once again."
